Four
A self-exploration of a former high-tech junkie
by Colby Phillips

I’ve learned about you.
I’ve learned about your insecurities, and your fears, and your weaknesses,
I’ve learned about what makes you tick, that you are a control freak.
And you can’t stand talking to your Dad
And you don’t like green or red chile sauce,
And you don’t want to really be tested.

But you did this to yourself,
But you had to break away,
But you wanted to start over.
You used to be the man.
You used to be the one,
You used to have the corner office with the big desk and the electronic organizer and the Platinum AMEX card,
You used to make the calls, build the walls, fill the halls,
You used to cash the checks,
You used to have responsibility that you held onto like the fragile golden key to happiness for now and life ever after,
You used to you used to you used to you used to you used to
and then you wanted a change.
You wanted to tear down the walls and rip up the script and erase the tape.
And you did.

Did what you had to do,
Did what had to be done,
Did what you wanted to do,
Did what you said you were going to do,
Did what people didn’t expect you to do,
Did what people didn’t even want you to do,
Did what you set out to do and then weren’t so sure you wanted to do it in the first place because you got scared,
Did what I didn’t think you could ever do.
Yeah, I’ve learned a lot about you.
Now quit looking at me in the mirror and get on with it.
